Leo J. Berube, age 81, of Bellingham, MA, passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024 at home. He was the former husband of Peggy Ann Berube and previously Marcia Bowman, whom he had four children with.
Born in Fall River, MA he was the son of the late Aime J. and Julia (White) Berube. Leo served in the U.S. Army in the early 1960s during the Cold War era. He served in Germany, where he was a German interpreter. He was a Store Keeper III for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts State Schools until his retirement. Prior to working for the Commonwealth, he worked for L.G. Balfour in Attleboro, MA.
Leo was a member of the V.F.W. and was very interested in genealogy. He had travelled extensively to research his family history. He was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and visited the country multiple times, even obtaining a "dual" Irish citizenship.
Leo was a devoted grandfather who enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sports games. He never missed a soccer game or cheer competition. You could always find him on the sidelines with his binoculars.
Leo is survived by his four sons, Richard (and his wife Corri), Gregory, Paul and Douglas Berube; his beloved grandchildren, Avary Giller, Mason, David, Kyleigh and Colin Berube; as well as several “bonus” grandchildren who he loved. Pepe loved passing out McDonalds gift cards to them at Christmas. He was the brother of Richard, George, Adrianne (Berube) Faltus, Roseanne (Berube) Papineau and the late Francis Berube. Leo also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, and many relatives in Ireland.

Catherine J. "Joan" Larocque, 90, passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024.
She was the wife of the late Philip A. Larocque. Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late Hugh H. and Helen V. (McGale) Williams. She was a lifelong resident of Cumberland.
She was formerly a lifelong parishioner of the former St. Patrick Church, Cumberland, prior to its merger with St. Aidan Church in Cumberland. Joan was also a member of the Cumberland Senior Center, Cumberland, and also a member and secretary of the Balfour Gold Dusters Foundation.
Joan was an avid reader and a passionate bowler, spending countless years playing in various leagues alongside her beloved husband. Though she found great joy in these hobbies, it was her time with family that she treasured most. Joan's devotion to her loved ones was unmatched, and her happiest moments were those spent surrounded by those she held dear. She was considered the family communicator and glue that held the family together.
She was employed by Attleboro Medical Associates for many years until her retirement in 2009, previously was employed by the former LG Balfour, Attleboro, Mass., for more than 30 years.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon M. Gobin of Cumberland, and Elizabeth A. "Bridget" Crawley and her husband, Richard, of Lincoln, and her son William R. Larocque Sr. and his wife, Kathy, of Cumberland; her four grandchildren: Jason Gobin, Nathan Crawley, William Larocque Jr., and Joseph Larocque; one great-granddaughter, Breanah Gobin, along with several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Philip A. Larocque and grandmother of the late Leo D. Gobin IV.
The family would like to thank Brenda, Dawn, Kim, and Maria for taking such great care of Joan. Without your dedication and care we would not have been able to fulfill her wish to continue to live at home.

Dear Gold Duster:
As has happened many times in the past, the Balfour Foundation has advised us that our requested funding will be delayed while the foundation considers all the grant requests that are submitted, not just our grant request. As a result, reimbursements for receipts that were submitted in August will be delayed until we receive funding.
Although these annual delays may seem disappointing, we all need to be thankful for what we are given each year. It is important to remember that none of us are entitled to anything. ANY reimbursement for our expenses is a gift from Mr. Balfour himself that reflects the love and respect that he had for all of you, his employees.
So I ask you, as we wait for the final decisions on our funding request, be patient. Your Board of Directors will keep you apprised of any changes. We fully expect to be paying out reimbursements, as soon as funds are available. If you have any questions, feel free to call either myself, or Tom Greene.
I hope to see all of you at our next meeting on September 18 for lunch at the Murray Church.
All the best:

July 12, 2024
Dear Fellow Gold Duster:
I hope you are enjoying the warm and sunshine of this summer season, a refreshing change from the winter cold and spring rains.
I am writing to you today to report on a few items that are important to all Gold Duster members. Specifically, I will be reporting on the health of our organization, reviewing the medical reimbursement rules and procedures, and asking for your advice and consent regarding your executive board.
First; the health of the Gold Dusters organization is good. As you should know, we are fully funded by the generous grant from the L.G. Balfour foundation. (Without their support, we would not be able to operate.) Your board has, again this year, filed an application for a grant to sustain our group for another year. The grant application was filed on time and we are, at this time, waiting to hear if our request will be fulfilled. As soon as we are notified, I will report back. I do not anticipate any interruptions in our activities at this time.
With regard to the reimbursements; It is VERY IMPORTANT that your receipts are received on time! The next deadline for receipts is August 6. Please check with the newsletter if you have any questions, all the current information is there. As always, please include all of your receipts. The current limit for reimbursements is $500, but there are times when we can do more. When we can, we will.
Recently, some members have been submitting statements from medical providers where they are on payment plans. Just to be clear, we cannot reimburse you for the total of these statements. We can only reimburse for the amount YOU ACTUALLY PAID. If you are requesting that we pay a provider directly, you need to attach a note. If we have funds, at the discretion of the board, we may be able to help, but payment cannot be guaranteed.
Finally; On the back of this letter is a listing of the current board members. These people serve our organization as volunteers, giving much time and talent to insure that the Gold Dusters organization can continue to fulfill Mr Balfour’s legacy. in accordance with our by-laws, at our September meeting, I will ask for any nominations to the board for the next year. at that time, you will have the opportunity to volunteer, or suggest any members name to serve on your board of directors. At our meeting in December, I will ask for a vote of the attendees to confirm our board as listed with any new board member suggestions. This is an important task and I ask that you consider serving if you are able.
As always, if you have questions or concerns, information is available on our website, in the newsletter, or feel free to contact me or any board member. Enjoy the rest of the summer and I’ll see you all in September.

Letter to Members

Dear Gold Dust Member:
Along with your board of directors, I hope you are well.
This letter will review our medical reimbursement program, a valuable gift from Mr. Balfour. The grant money received each year from the L.G. Balfour Foundation funds this benefit.
First, a reminder that if your mailing address, phone number, or email has changed, you must let us know so we can update your contact information! If you have a caregiver who assists you, include that person’s details as well. Accurate contact information allows us to process reimbursements and resolve any issues that may arise in a more timely manner.
If you are not participating in our reimbursement program, I encourage you to begin. Only two requirements must be met: One, you were an employee of the Balfour Company for a minimum of 2 years. Two, you have paid your $5.00 annual membership dues. With these 2 requirements met, you would then mail your medical receipts each quarter to:
Balfour Gold Dusters Helping Hands
PO Box 12
North Attleboro, MA 02761

We will reimburse “out of pocket” medical expenses. If the cost was paid by Medicare or other insurance, it is NOT eligible.
Valid expenses are doctor visits, copays, prescriptions, hospital stays, eye exams and medical devices. The Gold Dusters do NOT reimburse dental, eyeglasses, or insurance premiums.

Receipts submitted must include: your name, expense details, and price you paid. Cash register tapes can not be accepted. Valid receipts must be dated within the current quarter. Old receipts dated in previous quarters will not be reimbursed.
The deadlines for submitting receipts are listed below:
Receipts dated : Must be received by:
Nov - Dec - Jan February 6
Feb - March - April May 6
May - June - July August 6
Aug - Sept - Oct November 6

Currently, we are reimbursing to a $500 limit per quarter per member. However, please submit ALL your valid receipts each quarter, as we may be able to pay out more if funding allows.
Your board of directors and I continue to work diligently on your behalf and we look forward to seeing you at our next meeting. Best regards!

Dear Gold Duster:
At this time of year, as we think of Thanksgiving with all our family and friends around us, it is important to be thankful for the gift that Mr. Balfour left to his former employees! Mr. Balfour had great love and respect for all of his employees. As early as 1962, Mr Balfour was contemplating a foundation where, after his passing away, “The persons who mostly will benefit will be the employees of the Balfour Company”. That Foundation is what funds our activities and the very valuable medical reimbursement program that your board of directors manage on your behalf.
The L.G. Balfour Foundation has been very receptive and complimentary of the work we do and the fact that Former employees of Mr. Balfour continue to gather regularly and work to carry out the legacy that he left for all of us. So, when you give thanks at this Thanksgiving time, remember to also thank Mr Balfour and the L.G. Balfour Foundation. We should all be very grateful for the opportunity and the job that the Balfour company gave us. The job you had at the Balfour company had, “a unique and exclusive value”, that we are reminded of every time we receive a medical reimbursement check. Thank you Mr. Balfour!
As a reminder, The next deadline for Medical receipts is on November 6, 2023. Please be sure to mail your receipts on time and to the address below.
Also, Address labels for medical receipts are enclosed with this mailing for your convenience.
Sincerely:

SUBJECT: A message from your Gold Dusters President
Dear member:
It’s time to update you on the financial health of the Gold Dusters organization plus advise you of a new committee.
First, our organization’s financial health is good! After a long delay, we have again received funding from the L.G. Balfour Foundation at a level that will allow for Medical Reimbursements at the $500 level / quarter for the 2023-2024 fiscal year. Your Board of Directors and I have worked diligently to ensure that the request for our grant was placed on time and with all the correct documentation. This year’s delay was on the Foundations end, not ours. Thankfully the wait is over, and we can proceed with our medical reimbursement program plus quarterly luncheons.
Second, as you’re aware, your board is getting older, and the management is becoming more difficult. To continue at the level of service we’ve provided in the past, I’m asking our younger members step up and volunteer their time. We need assistance in the area explained below:
1. Member contact. Keeping in touch with our members is vital to the future success of our group. We will continue to send out newsletters and emails, but just taking a minute to call will help members feel included rather than isolated. The board would like to form a group of volunteers known as the “Member Contact Committee”.
The committee members would divide the membership list into a manageable number and then call each Gold Duster member to check in with them each quarter:
a. remind them of upcoming events.
b. the next deadline for submitting medical receipts.
c. any other important news that needs to be disseminated.
Assuming that ten (10) younger members step forward to form this committee, the calls would require about two hours per volunteer per month. If you can find the time to help, please contact me at your convenience.
As always your board is working hard to keep events running smoothly. Thanks to each board member for their dedication and service that maintains Mr. Balfour’s legacy.
Deadline for Medical Receipts: November 6, 2023. Must be received on time!

Gold Dusters Christmas Party: December 6 at the Elks Hall in Attleboro. Watch your mail for more info and RSVP deadlines.
Sincerely:
Paul J Poirier, Gold Dusters President

To all Gold Dusters

Your Board of Directors has been notified by the L.G. Balfour Foundation that our grant request for the 2023, 2024 year has been approved. Funding will be coming very shortly.

What this means is that we will be able to continue funding our medical receipt reimbursement program for another year. We expect to be maintaining a $500 per quarter maximum reimbursement through the next year.

It is very important that you, as a Gold Duster send in your receipts on time and to the proper address. Then next deadline for receipts is November 6, 2023.

All receipts should be sent to: Balfour Gold Dusters
Helping Hands
PO Box 12

Letter to all Gold Dusters
Dear Balfour Gold Duster:
You might be thinking that your request for medical reimbursements are lost! Please trust that they are NOT lost. So why the delay in issuing reimbursement checks?
As I think most of you know already, we are funded by the L.G. Balfour Foundation, a gift to us, as former employees, from Mr. Balfour himself. Each year we must request funding so we can continue our reimbursement of members’ medical expenses.
The total for May reimbursement is significantly higher than the balance remaining from last year’s grant, leaving us thousands of dollars short of the total needed.
As your president, I filed the grant application on time in late February. We expected to receive funding prior to early May. Unfortunately, the foundation has experienced delays in the processing of 2023 grant requests, (not just for us but for all applicants). We anticipate funding will be received later this month.
Because of the delay, your board of directors has decided to wait for funding rather than reduce payouts to our members.
SO PLEASE BE PATIENT! If you have any questions, contact me at any time.
Best regards:
Paul Poirier

Dear Gold Duster:
I have very important news to share with you. Simply put, our group is getting older and, in the not too distant future, our board members will be unable to administer the Gold Dusters Medical Reimbursement Benefit.
So, what are we doing about this?
With the help of Tom Greene and with the approval of your board of directors, I have initiated a plan with the Hockomock Area YMCA, North Attleboro, to handle our medical benefits administrative activities.
And so, beginning with the February 6 medical receipts deadline, we ask that you send all your medical receipts to our PO Box at the address above.
Pre-addressed labels are also enclosed to help you transition to this change.
The staff at the YMCA will verify and total your expenses. Your check will be mailed to you from our treasurer, as before, and until we feel the need to move this administrative duty as well.
The Gold Dusters board of directors and Helping Hands committee will continue to answer any questions about your reimbursements as we guide the Gold Dusters Organization into the future. Rest assured that the grant request and grant funding will remain under the control and guidance of your board of directors.
This information and any future updates will be communicated via email, mail and posted to our website. www.balfourgolddusters.wixsite.com/mysite If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time. Thank you for your support and co-operation!

In the First two quarters of our fiscal year, thanks to the generous grant from the L.G. Balfour Foundation, we have been able to distribute up to $500 per member for paid, out of pocket, medical expenses.
For the current quarter, (Sept Oct & Nov), the maximum reimbursement will be $400. This is necessary to keep our financials in balance and on budget. As always, please send in all of your eligible receipts, because if the budget allows, we may be able to do more!

Thanks for your cooperation

Bank of America representatives that oversee the L.G. Balfour Foundation have advised us that a grant for 2022 -2023 has been awarded to the Balfour Gold Dusters. This grant will allow us to continue with our work and efforts to help former employees of Mr. Balfour's company with medical expenses that are not covered by insurance. We all owe a deep debt of gratitude to Mr. Balfour and the people who oversee his foundation for keeping the Gold Dusters organization funded to do what we do.

Happy Spring, Gold Dusters with Email!
The snowy winter months are behind us, as well as the pandemic, so we can move around freely in most places without masks... yippee!
Reminder: mail ALL your medical receipts dated Feb-Mar-Apr to be received NO LATER THAN MAY 6 to be eligible for reimbursement. Be sure to mail early and allow time for the post office to deliver to our helping hands volunteers.
Good News! Your board has increased the quarterly medical expense reimbursement to $500 until further notice. This increase will be effective for the next quarter covering receipts dated May-June-July. We will analyze each quarter to determine if funds remain available to continue at this increased level.
And more good news! By now, you've received... or will soon... a postcard invitation to our long-overdue member meeting on June 15, complete with Italian Buffet and after luncheon entertainment! Be sure to mail your $10 to reserve your seat. For that event, we're seeking members to assist those who are less mobile. If you'd like to help, please call President Paul Poirier 508-726-8749.

Winter greetings, Gold Dusters with email!
So far, 2022 has seen wacky weather with more than a little snow in the Attleboro area! Hope everyone has survived with no mishaps!
Your board would like to welcome Mark Gilmore as our latest member. We met via ZOOM on January 16 to discuss these updates:
1. our hopes for a March luncheon were dashed by the continued concern about COVID variants, plus restrictive guidelines imposed by Murray Church. Let's all cross our fingers that a June luncheon can be planned before we adjourn for the summer months.
2. Reimbursement maximum for medical receipts dated February, March, and April has been raised to $350. Mail your original receipts to arrive by May 6. Each quarter, this expense will be analyzed to determine if we can continue this increased level of reimbursement with the remaining funds.
3. If you're aware of a Balfour employee who has not joined the Gold Dusters, please encourage him/her to do so and enjoy the benefits. To speed along their joining, the membership form is attached here for you to print and share.
4. a reminder that the eligibility requirement for membership has been reduced from five years to two years, which has increased new memberships.
The recent winners of the monthly Goldmark door prize were:
January: Elena Clark
February: Diane Afonso

Hello, Gold Dusters with email!
Unfortunately, with the return of COVID, the board's hopes to plan an autumn luncheon for members have been dashed. Though the Murray Church has reopened its door, their mask mandate plus many restrictions for groups has discouraged us from meeting there.
And now for the good news! We've booked our Christmas Party on Tues, Dec 7, 11am-3pm at The Chateau Restaurant in Norton, MA. The meal will be buffet style, and we have booked entertainment for your listening pleasure. If you and a guest are able to join your member co-workers for this long-overdue holiday gathering, please mail your $20ea check no later than Nov 20 to Balfour Gold Dusters, P.O. Box 12, North Attleboro, MA 02760.
If you have not yet submitted your membership dues for Sept '21- Aug '22, you can enclose the extra $5 with your party payment... if you mail by the deadline of Sept 30, 2021. If you do not plan to attend the Christmas Party, mail your $5 dues in the next few weeks.
If you submitted medical receipts for reimbursement, please be patient. We are awaiting grant approval and the arrival of funds before we can send your check.
On a sad note, the following Balfour employees have passed:
... Donna Jean Arenberg Hebert, 7-17-21
... Karl Hohlmaier 08-10-21
... Don Pelletier 08-09-21

Hello Gold Duster!
We hope you are well and avoided the Covid-19 Virus. After enduring a difficult 2020, a new, normal 2021 promises to allow resumption of our group activities! This letter will update you about the board’s future plans for the Gold Dusters Organization.

During our June 7 meeting, the board voted to explore resumption of our monthly gatherings. We remain in touch with the administration of the Murray Church and are hopeful that they will reopen soon and will again host our group.
Based on venue availability, our first activity could be a Welcome Back Brunch. The second event our 2021 Christmas Party. Preliminary planning for both activities is in the works. For the moment, sit tight and watch for an update that these activities have been finalized.

Hi All, It has been some time since we have seen each other and have been able to meet in person. With the widespread use of the vaccines and falling infections, returning to normal life looks promising. Hopefully better times are upon us and we can return to our normal activities.

Your board will be meeting again in the next few weeks to discuss possible plans for the resumption of activities, as well as, other business that impacts the Gold Dusters. I will post an update here and via email when we have more information.

A Holiday Message from your Gold Duster's President:

Although 2020 has been challenging and heart wrenching for many of us, we still have hope and the promise of better days to come. As we celebrate this holiday we need to remember that we are an organization founded to care for and support one another.
The Balfour Gold Dusters were formed from the family that was created by Mr. Balfour himself. I am sure that if he were here today he would tell us all to not dwell on the past, but to look forward and help build a better tomorrow. That is what we intend to do.
Have a Very Merry Christmas and a I look forward to better days and seeing you all in 2021

Reimbursement checks have been mailed. Because these were written out while we were waiting for the Balfour Foundation Grant money, the date may be old.
Some members have reported difficulty in cashing the checks at their local bank. Terry Tattersall has spoken with our contact at Goldmark Credit Union. They have stated that they will honor all of the checks without issues. So, if you experience any issue with your local bank, you have options:

1. Try to just deposit the check to your checking or savings account. this should be acceptable to almost any bank.

2. Take the check directly to Goldmark Credit Union
155 Pleasant St
Attleboro, MA 02703
they will cash it for you.

3. If option #1 and #2 are not practical, you can ask your local branch manager to call the manager at Goldmark. The number is:
-
Phone: (508) 222-3009
-
Fax: (508) 222-7693

4. If all of the above fails, contact Marge Betts, She can help you resolve any remaining issue.

As always, Thank you for your patience! We miss seeing all of you and hope things return to normal in 2021
November 1, 2020
All meetings are suspended at this time due to Covid-19 pandemic. We will post when meeting will resume when conditions allow. Thank you!
November 1, 2020
Hello Fellow Gold Dusters:
On behalf of your Board of Directors, I hope all of you are well and have avoided the Covid-19 Virus. 2020 has been a difficult year and we all hope for a better 2021 so we can resume our normal activities. This letter will bring all members up to date about current status and plans for the future of the Gold Dusters Organization.
Your board has been meeting via Zoom to conduct business on your behalf. At our October 28 meeting, the directors and committee members voted to SUSPEND ALL MEMBER MEETINGS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE, mainly because the Murray Church is closed and unavailable. When we deem it safe to resume the monthly meetings, the dates and location will be advised.
Also, the board voted to suspend member dues for 2021. If you are a paid member for 2020, you are considered a member in good standing for 2021. If you have already mailed your 2021 dues, your check will be returned via the postal service. This personalized letter will serve as your 2021 membership credential. Membership cards for 2021 will NOT be issued.
The Balfour Foundation grant for 2020 has finally been approved. The process was delayed by remote workers necessary to lessen the effect of the CV-19 pandemic. As soon as the bank check is received and deposited, medical reimbursement checks will be mailed for the previous quarter, followed closely by the current quarter. The payout of $300 per quarter remains in effect. We thank you all for your patience.
NOTE: If you collect medical expense receipts exceeding the $300 per quarter limit, please mail them ALL when you submit for reimbursement. If the board ever votes to increase beyond the current $300 limit, we will need those extra receipts for the calculations.
Finally, a new website has been created: www.balfourgolddusters.wixsite.com/mysite. If you have not been receiving occasional email updates, please advise your email address through the new website.
Thank you all. Please stay safe and healthy.
Paul Poirier
